Welcome to Nasty Norwich, history with the smelly bits!

The Tudors

Ten terrible things about the Turbulent Tudors!

1 The worst-ever rebellion in the city's history - led by John Kett - left thousands dead in 1549. Including John - left to hang in chains at the castle for months...

2 Another John who came to a sticky end was John Throgmorton who tried to throw out Dutch refugees in 1570s... and was hung, drawn and quartered for his pains. Not a great idea, John.

3 When Elizabeth I came to visit, the mayor issued a special request to the people of Norwich: Please, please, PLEASE don't poo in the street....

4 More than 4000 people died of the plague in just a few months in 1579-80

5 In 1580 the city was hit by an earthquake!

6 More than 50 people met a grisly end near Bishopbridge. Why? They dared to have a different religion to their rulers.

This ere punishment is cruel7 Robert Gold decided in 1554 to write a rude song about Good Queen Bess. Big mistake - he had his ears nailed as punishment.

8 If you were a big of a moaner, you could end up being dunked in the stinky Wensum. That'll teach you to be more cheerful!

9 Two fires in 1507 burned down four of every ten houses in Norwich

10 Bad news for beggars... you'd be whipped and turned out of the city. If you were lucky.
